Seychelles Strengthens Capacity in Food Balance Sheet Compilation with FAO Support

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through its Support for the Operationalization of the SADC Agriculture Regional Policy (STORAR II) project, supports Seychelles in strengthening its capacity to compile and analyze Food Balance Sheets (FBS).

A two-week training and compilation workshop commenced on 19 October 2026 at the Guy Morel Institute (TGMI), Majoie, and brought together technical representatives from key government institutions, including the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy, Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning, Trade and Investment, Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Ministry of Health, and the Seychelles Bureau of Statistics.

The workshop was facilitated by FAO Food Balance Sheet experts, Dominique Habimana and Issa Muvunyi.

Food Balance Sheets provide important information on a country’s food supply, utilization, and availability for human consumption. They help monitor food security and nutrition trends while supporting evidence-based decision-making in agricultural, food and trade policies.

The training aims to strengthen the technical capacity of national experts to compile, analyze, and regularly update Food Balance Sheets in line with the latest international standards and methodologies. It also supports the compilation and validation of Seychelles’ national Food Balance Sheets for 2023, 2024 and 2025, subject to data availability.

This initiative forms part of FAO’s continued support to strengthen national agricultural and food statistics, enabling Seychelles to make more informed decisions and improve planning for food security, nutrition and sustainable agricultural development.
