Agriculture in Seychelles has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decades, evolving from a sector traditionally associated with plantation crops into a dynamic and strategic industry that contributes significantly to food and nutrition security. Agriculture is recognized as a critical pillar in supporting the country’s efforts to strengthen food sovereignty, reduce import dependency, promote healthy lifestyles, and create sustainable livelihoods.
Seychelles faces unique challenges that influence agricultural development. Limited arable land, high production costs, dependence on imported agricultural inputs, vulnerability to climate change, and exposure to external economic shocks all present significant constraints to domestic food production.
These challenges have reinforced the national commitment to strengthening domestic food production and building a modern agricultural system capable of meeting the country’s growing food and nutritional needs.
In response, the Ministry of Fisheries Agriculture and Blue Economy has expanded its mandate beyond traditional agricultural administration to become a leading institution driving agricultural modernization, food security, climate-smart agriculture, biosecurity, innovation, value chain development, and sustainable resource management.
Recognizing the importance of science, technology, research, and innovation, Seychelles continues to invest in modern farming systems, greenhouse production, protected agriculture, improved livestock management, digital agriculture, climate adaptation measures, and capacity building for farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs. These advancements are essential to increasing productivity, improving efficiency, enhancing competitiveness, and ensuring long-term food and nutrition security.
Despite the challenges facing the sector, significant opportunities exist to increase domestic production of key commodities, including vegetables, fruits, poultry, pork, and other agricultural products. Through strategic investments in infrastructure, farmer training, biosecurity systems, agricultural technology, irrigation, post-harvest management, and value-added processing, Seychelles is laying the foundation for a more productive, sustainable, and resilient agricultural sector.
The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy remains committed to working closely with farmers, agricultural stakeholders, development partners, educational institutions, the private sector, and the wider community to achieve these objectives. Collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation will be central to building a thriving agricultural industry that contributes meaningfully to national development and food resilience.
