The Joint Management Area (JMA) continues to demonstrate the strength of bilateral cooperation through the successful convening of the Technical Committee (TC) and Joint Commission (JC) meetings on the 28th and 29th July 2026, at the Savoy Hotel, Seychelles, which brought together representatives from both Parties (Seychelles and Mauritius) to review progress, discuss key technical matters, and advance the sustainable management of the shared maritime area.
The Joint Technical Committee met to examine ongoing activities under the Joint Management Area, assess progress on the implementation of previous decisions, and deliberate on a range of technical and operational issues. Throughout the meeting, technical experts exchanged knowledge, reviewed scientific and management information, and developed recommendations aimed at strengthening cooperation and ensuring the sustainable use of shared marine resources.
The recommendations agreed upon by the Technical Committee which was co-chaired by Ms. Veronique Nibourette, Principal Secretary for Blue Economy (Seychelles) and Dr. Mohammed Rezah Badal, Director General, from the Prime Minister’s office (Mauritius) were subsequently presented to the Joint Commission for consideration. The Joint commission was co-Chaired by Mr. Alain de Comarmond, Secretary of State for Fisheries and Blue Economy 9Seychelles) and Mr. S.C. Sebaluck, Secretary to the Cabinet (Mauritius). During its meeting, the Joint Commission reviewed the outcomes of the technical discussions, endorsed the recommendations, and formally approved and signed the Minutes of Meeting. This important step reaffirms the commitment of both Parties to transparent governance, evidence-based decision-making, and the continued implementation of the Joint Management Area framework.
During the meeting, a number of important decisions were taken across a wide range of priority areas within the Joint Management Area. These included matters relating to exploratory fisheries, capacity building and training initiatives, geotechnical surveys for oil and gas exploration, the review and consideration of marine scientific research proposals, and the establishment of a Marine Environment Fund, amongst others. The decisions reflect the Joint Commission’s continued commitment to promoting the sustainable management and development of the Joint Management Area while strengthening scientific collaboration, environmental stewardship, and institutional capacity.
The successful conclusion of both meetings marks another significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between the two countries. Through regular dialogue and collaborative decision-making, the Joint Management Area continues to serve as an effective platform for the sustainable management of shared marine resources, while promoting regional cooperation, environmental stewardship, and the growth of the blue economy.
The Joint Management Area remains a model of international cooperation, demonstrating how neighbouring States can work together to balance the sustainable use of marine resources with the protection of the marine environment. The decisions adopted during these meetings will guide future activities under the JMA and further strengthen collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
