Under the RAF 5089 Project, ESCO Biosafety Cabinet training was conducted from 4 to 6 August 2026, aimed at strengthening local capacity in biosafety, laboratory safety, and the proper management of specialized laboratory equipment.
The three-day training was facilitated by two technical experts from Kenya and South Africa and brought together seven participants from the Ministry of Health (MOH), the private sector, and the Agriculture Department.
The training focused on the safe operation and proper use of biosafety cabinets, as well as equipment maintenance, biosafety procedures, and compliance with established biosafety and operational standards.
Participants were selected based on their direct involvement in the operation and maintenance of biosafety cabinet equipment. Through the training, they gained practical knowledge and technical skills to ensure that the equipment is operated safely, maintained appropriately, and used in accordance with the required standards.
Upon completion of the training, participants were certified, contributing to the development of a pool of trained personnel with the necessary competencies to support safe and effective laboratory operations.
The training represents an important step towards strengthening biosafety capacity and laboratory standards in Seychelles, while promoting safe working practices and ensuring greater compliance with established biosafety requirements.
