The Agriculture Department welcomed the start of a five-day training program on Biofertilizer Development, which took place from 13–17 July 2026 at the Diagnostic Centre, Grand Anse, Mahé organized as part of the ongoing International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Cooperation Project SEY5013, entitled “Developing and Promoting Best Nutrient and Water Management Practices to Enhance Food Security and Environmental Sustainability.”Write-up
The training was facilitated by Ms. Kwai Hoe Phua Choo, Research Officer from the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, who has returned to Seychelles as part of a follow-up expert mission to review progress made since the initial mission conducted in 2023 and to further strengthen the country’s capacity in biofertilizer development.
Throughout the week, participants from the Agriculture Department received both theoretical and hands-on training in laboratory and field techniques, including microbial isolation, quality control testing, biosafety and biosecurity, culture stock production, greenhouse and field application methods, and biofertilizer product development. The program also focused on designing future experiments and developing strategies to support the wider adoption of biofertilizer technologies in Seychelles.
This mission is expected to strengthen national technical expertise, support the development of locally adapted biofertilizer products, improve sustainable nutrient management practices, and contribute to increased agricultural productivity while reducing environmental impacts.
