Each year on November 21st, countries across the globe come together to celebrate World Fisheries Day. As the minister responsible for fisheries, this celebration is one of great importance to me. This year in particular, we gather to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions of our fisheries and the blue economy under the theme “Blue Transformation in Action.” This year’s observance serves as a call to action for sustainable practices that ensure the longevity of our marine resources and the livelihoods they support.
In Seychelles, fisheries play a critical role in food security, economic stability, and community resilience. As we face unprecedented challenges, from climate change to overfishing, it is imperative that we embrace transformative strategies that uphold the health of our oceans while promoting innovation and sustainability.
The theme “Blue Transformation in Action” emphasizes our commitment to implementing forward-thinking approaches that integrate ecological, social, and economic factors in our fisheries management practices. Under the leadership of my ministry, the government is dedicated to advancing initiatives that harness technology, engage local communities, and foster partnerships across sectors to unlock the full potential of our blue economy.
We stand at a pivotal moment where transformative actions can lead us towards a more sustainable future for our oceans and coastal communities. I therefore urge all stakeholders—governments, NGOs, industry leaders, and local communities—to collaborate and share knowledge, ensuring that our actions today pave the way for a sustainable future. By working together, we can create a resilient fisheries sector that not only meets our current needs but also protects the marine ecosystems for the generations to come.
As we commemorate this important day, let us reflect on our shared responsibility to safeguard our oceans and embrace the changes that will lead to a more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous blue economy.
In conclusion, as your Minister, I will ensure that the right political and social will is on the side of the fisheries sector for the benefit of all Seychellois people. Together, let us work towards a more sustainable and prosperous blue economy that benefits current and future generations.
Wishing you a happy World Fisheries Day!
