Seychelles Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Shanghai Ocean University to Strengthen Cooperation in Fisheries and Marine Science
The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy of the Republic of Seychelles yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shanghai Ocean University aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fields of fisheries science, aquaculture, ocean governance, marine technology, and capacity building.
The MoU was signed by the Principal Minister and Minister for Fisheries, Agriculture and Blue Economy, Wallace Cosgrow, and Professor Dr. HU Wei on behalf of the University.
In his opening remarks, Minister Cosgrow highlighted that the partnership presents an important opportunity to deepen cooperation between Seychelles and Shanghai Ocean University, particularly in scientific and technical fields that support the sustainable development of the fisheries and blue economy sectors. He further noted the importance of strengthening collaboration in research, innovation, training, and knowledge exchange.
Representatives of Shanghai Ocean University also provided an overview of the institution, highlighting its internationally recognised expertise in aquaculture, fisheries, marine biology, oceanography, and other marine-related disciplines. The University reaffirmed its commitment to fostering academic and technical cooperation with Seychelles.
During the ceremony, the Seychelles Fisheries Authority delivered a presentation on its mandate and ongoing work in fisheries management, monitoring, scientific research, and sustainable fisheries development in Seychelles.
The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation between the Ministry and the University based on equality, reciprocity, and mutual benefit. Areas of cooperation include academic and professional exchanges, joint research and development activities, capacity building and training programmes, participation in seminars and workshops, and the exchange of scientific information and academic materials.
The MoU will remain in effect for a period of five years and provides for the establishment of mechanisms to monitor and evaluate collaborative activities undertaken under the partnership.
During the visit, the Vice President of the University, Professor Min Jiang, also extended an invitation to Minister Cosgrow to visit Shanghai Ocean University to further strengthen cooperation and explore future areas of collaboration.
