Seychelles becomes first country to achieve full FiTI compliance

Victoria, Seychelles – 27 February 2025 – Seychelles has made history by becoming the first country to achieve the ‘Compliant’ status with the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI), reinforcing its commitment to sustainable fisheries management and transparent governance.

This milestone marks a significant step forward for Seychelles as a leader in fisheries transparency. The country has made significant progress, Seychelles ensures that critical information about the fisheries sector—including access agreements, stock assessments, and financial contributions—is publicly available and easily accessible. The announcement follows a rigorous assessment process, where Seychelles successfully met the validation requirements.

The Seychelles FiTI National Multi-Stakeholder Group (NMSG), which oversees the implementation of FiTI in the country, played a crucial role in achieving this milestone. Their collaboration demonstrates how inclusive governance and stakeholder engagement drive meaningful reforms in the fisheries sector.

As the first country to reach full compliance, Seychelles sets an example for other coastal nations seeking to enhance fisheries transparency. This achievement also strengthens the country’s reputation as a leader in sustainable ocean governance, aligning with international commitments such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Blue Economy vision.

Looking ahead, Seychelles will focus on maintaining compliance, strengthening stakeholder engagement, and encouraging other countries in the region and beyond to embark on their own FiTI journeys.
