Today, as we celebrate Blue Economy Day through the theme: “People and the Ocean: A Sustainable and Symbiotic Relationship”, we are reminded of the vital interdependence between humanity and the marine environment, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices to ensure the health and safeguard of both. Yet, it is significant for us to mould our viewpoint to not just categorize this relationship in terms of dependency, but as one that is symbiotic with mutual benefits.
This year we want to focus on the numerous positive aspects of the important relationship that we have with our ocean. The ocean is the heartbeat of our nation, providing us with food, employment, and endless inspiration. From our vibrant fisheries and thriving tourism industry to the vital ecosystems that support marine life, the blue economy is the foundation of our villages and our culture.
We rely on the ocean, and the ocean relies on us to care for it. By embracing sustainable practices, reducing pollution, protecting marine habitats, and supporting responsible tourism, we can and have a duty to ensure that our ocean remains a source of life and abundance for generations to come.
Let us take this opportunity to recommit ourselves to sustainable ocean management, by using the oceans’ resources in a way and at a rate that does not lead to a long-term decline of biological diversity, thereby maintaining its potential to meet the needs and aspirations of present and future generations. As a country, we need to find ways to broaden our traditional sectors, re-enforce our emerging sectors, and identify and develop new economic sectors.
Together, we can build a future where the ocean continues to flourish, supporting both our communities and the incredible biodiversity that calls it home.
Last but not least, I would like to express my earnest appreciation to everyone who has dedicated their time and efforts to promoting the sustainable use of our ocean and its resources, and also to all those to aspire to do so in future. It is only through our combined efforts and commitment that we can ensure that the ocean remains a thriving part of our lives for generations to come. So may this blue economy day inspire us to constructively work together now and in the coming years, to foster a relationship between people and ocean that is both symbiotic and sustainable.
Happy Blue Economy Day, Seychelles!
