Launch of the Seychelles Micro Continent: A Milestone for Knowledge in the Blue Economy

The Department of Blue Economy, under the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy, officially launched the Seychelles Micro Continent at Kenwyn House today, marking a significant step in advancing knowledge and research within the blue economy sector.

The Seychelles Micro Continent is more than just a book – it is a knowledge tool designed to educate and inspire. It explores the geological foundation of Seychelles and its direct connection to key economic sectors such as fisheries, tourism, and renewable energy. The publication provides valuable insights that will contribute to future decision-making, research, and capacity-building efforts within the country.

The event, attended by key stakeholders, government officials, and international partners, underscored the importance of collaboration in developing and disseminating ocean-related knowledge. Minister for Fisheries and the Blue Economy, Jean-François Ferrari, delivered a keynote speech, emphasizing the book’s role in furthering Seychelles’ blue economy vision and strengthening its position as a leader in ocean governance.

One of the highlights of the launch was a video intervention by Ms. Faouzia Abdoulhalik, Program Specialist at the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), who spoke on behalf of Mr. Georges Nakseu Nguefang, OIF’s Representative for the Indian Ocean. Ms. Abdoulhalik was actively involved in the bilateral discussions where this project was first pitched for possible funding, and she played a crucial role as the main focal point for communication between OIF and the Department of Blue Economy.

As part of its commitment to knowledge-sharing, the Department of Blue Economy also officially handed over three copies of the Seychelles Micro Continent to the National Library. This ensures that the book remains accessible to students, researchers, and the wider public, reinforcing the department’s goal of strengthening ocean literacy and fostering a deeper understanding of Seychelles’ blue economy.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Jean-Luc Mondon, a project consultant for the OIF Grant, highlighted the scientific significance of the book, particularly in bridging the gap between geology and economic development. His expertise played a key role in shaping the content of the publication, which is expected to serve as a reference material for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders.

With 2025 marking the 10th anniversary of the Department of Blue Economy, this book comes at the perfect time. It serves as a tangible tool to support the department’s focus on strategic communication, capacity building, and public engagement under the theme: “One Ocean for Today and Tomorrow’s Generation.”

As Seychelles continues to champion the blue economy on the global stage, the launch of the Seychelles Micro Continent reinforces the country’s commitment to fostering knowledge-driven sustainable development.
