The Designated Minister and Minister for Fisheries and the Blue Economy of Seychelles, Honourable Jean-François Ferrari, marked his presence at two significant events in Seoul, Korea, furthering international cooperation and fostering sustainable development in the field of oceans and fisheries.
On June 5, 2024, Designated Minister Ferrari delivered a congratulatory address at the opening of the 2024 Korea International Cooperation Conference on Oceans and Fisheries (KICCOF). The event, under the theme “Cooperation on Oceans and Fisheries for A Better Future,” brought together key stakeholders and experts to discuss the future of marine resources and sustainable practices. Designated Minister Ferrari’s address underscored the importance of Korea-Africa cooperation in promoting sustainable development and emphasised Seychelles’ commitment to the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.
In addition to his address, Designated Minister Ferrari also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Honourable Do-Hyung Kang, Minister for Oceans and Fisheries of Korea. This MOU establishes cooperation between Seychelles and Korea in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture. The agreement aims to enhance bilateral collaboration, facilitate knowledge transfer, information sharing, and capacity-building initiatives, promote the trade of fish and fishery products and private sector cooperation, as well as combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing within these vital sectors.
This MOU underscores the shared commitment of Seychelles and Korea to address global challenges such as climate change, overfishing, and marine pollution. It highlights the mutual benefits of technological and scientific collaboration, and it paves the way for future projects that will strengthen the resilience and sustainability of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
Designated Minister Ferrari’s participation in these events in Seoul exemplifies Seychelles’ proactive approach to international cooperation and sustainable development of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
