Department of Blue Economy Engages UNEP Leadership to Strengthen Partnerships for Sustainable Ocean Governance

The Department of Blue Economy held a meeting with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Director for Africa, Rose Mwebaza, during her official visit to Seychelles. She was accompanied by UNEP Deputy Regional Director Rajiv Garg and the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Mauritius and Seychelles, Lisa Simrique Singh.

Representing the Department of Blue Economy were Secretary of State Alain De Comarmond, Principal Secretary Veronique Nibourette, Director General Chrissant Barbe, and Principal Research Officer Abel Sorry.

The meeting provided an opportunity to present an overview of the United Nations presence and coordination mechanisms in Seychelles and to explore potential areas of cooperation aligned with the priorities of the Ministry responsible for Blue Economy. Discussions also highlighted key national initiatives, including Seychelles’ ongoing efforts towards the domestication of the BBNJ Agreement, as well as progress in advancing the implementation of the country’s Blue Economy Roadmap.

The engagement reaffirmed the importance of strong partnerships between Seychelles and the United Nations system in supporting sustainable ocean governance, environmental protection, and the continued advancement of the Blue Economy agenda.

The Department of Blue Economy expressed its appreciation to the UNEP delegation and the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office for their continued collaboration and support in advancing shared objectives for sustainable ocean development in Seychelles.
