The 3rd FAD watch mission participants received send off from the Minister of Fisheries and the Blue Economy, Minister Jean-François Ferrari, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Fisheries Authority, Dr. Jan Robinson. This was during a short ceremony held this morning at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base. The crew (4 students and a lecturer from the Seychelles Maritime Academy, a Scientific Observer and a Senior Fisheries Scientist from SFA) will be engaged in a 21-day mission to intercept and recover drifting FADs.
During the send-off, Dr. Robinson presented the crew with essential supplies for their trip. These included sunscreens, water shoes, and neoprene vests. Dr. Robinson advised the students to fully embrace the experience while keeping in mind their main objective which is to collect as many FADs as possible.
On his part, Minister Ferrari wished the team luck and urged them to take precautions while at sea. He also thanked the SMA and SCG for their ongoing support and expressed hope that by the end of the trip, the students will have gained new insights and become advocates for such initiatives.
