Seychelles Department of Blue Economy and US Embassy Discuss Collaboration Opportunities in Ocean Governance and Marine Biotechnology

Press Release
Department of Blue Economy – Seychelles

The United States and Seychelles have long shared a mutual commitment to advancing the principles of the blue economy, with fruitful cooperation spanning several years. This partnership has been instrumental in enhancing capacity building, marine conservation efforts, and promoting the sustainable use of marine resources, all of which are central to Seychelles’ national development strategy.

In this context, the Department of Blue Economy of Seychelles recently met with Mr. Daniel M. Renna, the Regional Environmental Officer for East Africa from the United States Embassy in Addis Ababa. The meeting, which also saw the participation of Ms. Anjana Khemraz Chikhuri and Ms. Joanna Chen from the United States Embassy in Port-Louis, Mauritius, centered on exploring potential avenues for collaboration in ocean governance, alongside emerging sectors such as marine biotechnology.

Seychelles’ blue economy serves as a driving pillar of the nation’s economic framework, harmonizing social, environmental, and economic benefits in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A key focus of the discussion was the emerging and transformative sector of marine biotechnology. The Department of Blue Economy highlighted its mandate in fostering the growth of this sector through capacity building and knowledge transfer, notably through a project funded by the African Development Bank. The department has expressed its strong intent to explore the socio-economic potential of marine biotechnology, with particular emphasis on product development, innovation, and its capacity to drive economic growth.

This forward-looking collaboration underscores Seychelles’ commitment to positioning itself as a global leader in ocean governance and sustainable development, while also fostering innovative sectors that will benefit both the nation and the broader global community.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with fruitful discussions and updates reflecting significant progress since last year. With promising developments underway, the department looks forward to further strengthening its partnership with the United States and other international stakeholders in the years to come, as it works toward advancing sustainable ocean governance and fostering new sectors for economic growth.
