Seychelles Becomes the First Small Island Developing State to Support the International Platform for Ocean Sustainability (IPOS)

Victoria, Seychelles and Paris, France – 27 March 2025 : Seychelles has once again affirmed its leadership in ocean sustainability by becoming the first Small Island Developing State to support the International Platform for Ocean Sustainability (IPOS).This milestone strengthens Seychelles’ position as a global advocate for sustainable development and reinforces its role in shaping forward-thinking solutions for ocean governance.

The ocean is at a tipping point, facing increasing threats from climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and overexploitation. While global frameworks such as the Global Biodiversity Framework and the upcoming Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement provide essential commitments, the challenge remains in translating these promises into large-scale, effective action. IPOS aims to bridge this gap by equipping governments with science-driven, policy-focused solutions that accelerate ocean sustainability efforts.

As Seychelles partners with IPOS to transform scientific knowledge into practical, implementable policies; the initiative offers:

  • Action Requests to provide tailored policy recommendations based on the best available knowledge,
  • Rapid Response Service through AI-powered, peer-reviewed analyses to address urgent knowledge needs and;
  • A collaborative space for governments, experts, civil society, and the private sector to exchange best practices and drive innovation.

With IPOS set to launch officially at the 2025 UN Ocean Conference, Seychelles’ early endorsement demonstrates its commitment to pioneering bold, transformative ocean policies. As a Blue Economy champion, Seychelles continues to lead by example, advocating for innovative, sustainable ocean governance.

“In our pursuit of global ocean sustainability, Seychelles recognizes that informed decisions lead to lasting change. Our work with IPOS harnesses the power of AI to facilitate the sharing of critical knowledge, ensuring that every action we take is guided by data that benefits our people, our economy, and the global ocean targets we must meet.” Mrs. Phillianne Ernesta, Principal Secretary of the Department of Blue Economy.

Seychelles’ engagement with IPOS aligns with its broader commitment to ocean sustainability leveraging science, fostering partnerships, and driving meaningful action to protect the ocean for future generations.
