Department of Blue Economy and Oceano Azul Foundation Explore Strategic Cooperation on Emerging Blue Sectors

The Department of Blue Economy held a bilateral meeting with the Oceano Azul Foundation on the sidelines of UNOC3 to explore cooperation in advancing sustainable ocean-based initiatives. The discussion reflected strong alignment between both institutions on promoting science-driven, economically viable, and environmentally responsible blue economy strategies.

One of the key areas of potential collaboration identified was Blue Biotechnology a field with the capacity to generate sustainable innovations across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, marine bio-processing, cosmetics, and aquaculture. Both parties discussed the development of technology-driven projects, enhanced institutional exposure through international networks, and the creation of sustainable business models that promote a circular blue economy. The potential of marine biotechnology goes beyond innovation it’s about building resilient economies that are rooted in our natural capital said PS Ernesta from the Department of Blue Economy.

Another critical topic addressed was the Extended Continental Shelf (ECS) of the Northern Plateau and Aldabra Region. Seychelles is currently in the process of strengthening its submission under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Both sides emphasized the urgent need to consolidate scientific, social, and economic data to bolster the nation’s legal and geopolitical standing.

The meeting also featured an in-depth discussion on the transformation of Seychelles’ ports into Greenports, led by Ms. Estelle Lucas of the Seychelles Ports Authority. The initiative involves greening port infrastructure, transitioning to low-emission operations, and implementing circular waste management systems. These efforts are expected to significantly reduce environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency and competitiveness. “We are not just rethinking port logistics; we are designing a maritime future that is clean, innovative, and inclusive,” said Ms. Lucas. “Greenports are central to achieving that vision.”

The meeting concluded with agreement on the need for continued dialogue and exchanges to take these strategic ideas forward. This engagement marks a critical step in building robust partnerships that strengthen Seychelles’ leadership in sustainable ocean governance and blue economy innovation.
